The Power of Bliss…by Lisa Thorp
In a world stretched by painful contrast it is a wonder what is this thing called Bliss. In spite of its definition of perfect untroubled happiness or a state of spiritual joy, Bliss often blooms in the harshest of scenarios and that is what makes it so sublime.
I was reminded of this truth recently by one of the many incredible Renaissance women that I know, Edie LaPorte, Kahala, HI-based realtor, office manager and queen of the sport of kings.
Her arms stretched out, one hand on the steering wheel and one curling around the car door jam, Edie braced herself for the needle that Bryant carefully placed high up into her upper trigeminal nerve. It would take a couple good shots to numb the pain so she could ride in the game.
It is warm and sunny with a curt breeze clipping off the Pacific Ocean on the North Shore of Oahu and the local Polo scrimmage is about to begin.
As Edie stepped away from the vehicle, a half smile from the Novocain, I could see the gleam of joyful anticipation in her Hawaii sky-blue eyes. For Edie, playing polo is a slice of Bliss, especially with her new baby Bella, a chestnut thoroughbred mare, under her.
It has been seven weeks since Edie took a polo ball in the face, busting clear through her upper lip and knocking her two front teeth out. Good thing Bryant was there to catch her as she slid off the horse. Edie admits she is still a bit shy about the ball but with the new wire mask on her helmet she is feeling more confident.
Listening to her story, all I could think was, God I wish I had our equipment to treat her and help ease her pain. I mention it to her but it is clear she is well on her way to being healed and overcoming the toughest battle, which is concurring the fear and getting back in the game.
I watch Edie and Bella saunter onto the polo field, where my husband is practicing his swing. An overwhelming feeling of pride and passion wells up in my heart and then my throat till my eyes tear up a bit. I am in Bliss just witnessing her courage but also to be watching my newfound life bloom before my eyes like the most beautiful wild flower.
It has been two years since John, my husband, and I met, two years to fully recover from fibromyalgia and despair, and two years since I formed Bliss Factory, a company created to promote Bliss. More specifically Bliss Factory is about witnessing, embracing and empowering women to realize, manifest and showcase their own personal BLISS.
Whether it is riding a thoroughbred in the Sport of Kings or admiring the boldness and beauty of our kindred spirits, Bliss is an ever-present reality beckoning us to choose it every second of our lives even when it hurts.
